CDM HOT WORK COURSE AT KELLOGG – MANCHESTER
In my role as a CDM Health & Safety Site Manager, I was managing a large project at Kellogg’s in Manchester. I met Simon when I was booked on to a two day training seminar for Hot Works Permit Writing and FireWatcher.
Simon’s approach to training was very informal using presentations, videos, case law, past experience and demonstration equipment.
I personally got a lot out of both of these sessions, mainly due to Simon’s extensive knowledge of the subject matter; coupled with his calm and collected manner of teaching.
Spending some social time with Simon during breaks over the two days further displayed his deep passion for his vocation which, speaking as a trainer myself, only adds to the overall experience.
I honestly was not aware the role of FireWatcher was SO in-depth with a significantly high level of responsibility, and as such I have updated my Site Induction presentation to include this.
I completely enjoyed attending these courses for the two days and would without a doubt use Simon again for similar sessions when the requirement presents itself. If anyone reading this ever has a need for this topic of training, I strongly recommend you contact Simon for a chat first.

SCOTTISH FORESTRY COMMISSION
Simon carried out Fire Risk Assessment surveys of the offices and workshops around our district plus training for local staff. Keeping it simple, Simon did a 1st class job providing excellent value for money. His skills combine an extensive technical knowledge of Fire Risk, an in depth understanding of regulations and standards delivered with an eye to pragmatism. Everyone who attended Simon’s training sessions found them informative and interesting. In UK Forestry we are working to improve our health and safety standards. Simon’s work for us locally has been an important part of this.

NIGG ENERGY PARK – GLOBAL ENERGY GROUP
I just wanted to thank you for your time yesterday, the training content was excellent and I have received very positive feedback from the guards that I have spoken to that attended. The point that everyone has touched on is your depth of subject knowledge, it was very clear from the off that you knew your stuff and you delivered in a very relaxed and engaging manner.

“Simon is able to provide fire safety training to staff at all levels in any organisation. The training that he has provided to our fire wardens and health & safety advisors was pitched at exactly the right level. Simon’s delivery style is refreshing and helps delegates understand that ultimately fire safety is about protecting the lives of real people.
Simon has an encyclopedic knowledge of fire safety legislation and related industry standards. The fire risk assessment process is much more than just printing off a check-list from the internet and ticking a few boxes! It requires a real understanding of fire safety and what is required to remain legally compliant. You can be assured that the advice and information provided by Simon allows you to do just that” – Tim Skyrme, Facilities Manager. University of the Highlands and Islands.

Regarding reference for Mr Simon Riddell (previously employed as Fire Training Officer within NHS Highland).
I write in my capacity as Director of Operations for Raigmore Hospital, NHS Highland in relation to Simon Riddell who was employed as Fire Training Officer at NHS Highland up to December 2012.
During the 2 year period which I have known Simon I have received excellent feedback from senior staff and other departmental staff regarding Simon’s fire training. Simon is particularly good in developing Fire Training Programmes which are specific to individual ward areas and departments. This is a skill which I have no doubt he will put to good use when providing Fire Training to a range of other public bodies and private organisations.
Director of Operations
The Highland Council – Laurandy Day Care Centre – Wick
As a small voluntary sector provider I was required to ensure fire regulations were in place at our day care centre. Although I was responsible for all fire awareness I felt I needed more expertise. The centre is a registered care provider and the people who attend must have guarantees of high standards of care and fire safety is part of this.
Simon Riddell was recommended as a contact person who could come to the centre and offer advice. This recommendation came through an NHS manager. Simon arranged a training day for staff which was very interesting and enjoyable. The staff were very enthusiastic about what they felt they could now improve upon and certainly felt their knowledge was increased through DVD clips, demonstration and role play. The layout of my new fire log is much more professional in its presentation and all appliances are now up to recognised standards.
Simon will now be my contact person and will visit on an annual basis to hold fire evacuation training updates for staff. He will also carry out annual checks on the fire fighting appliances at the centre.
Simon was friendly and approachable and keen to be of assistance tailoring his training to our specific needs. His costs were reasonable which is important for a small organisation like Laurandy Centre who do not have excess funds.
His support is much appreciated and I now feel much more confident than before.
Aaron Carr – Clinical Educator and Senior Nurse for Children’s HDU Services at NHS Highland
“Simon takes a proactive and passionate approach to risk assessment. He works closely with clients to discover risks relating to fire ignition, detection and evacuation. He is driven to formulate individualised solutions to real world fire safety dynamics before they get the opportunity to kill people. I can highly recommend S.R. Fire LTD. to analyse your fire safety risks and develop systems to protect you, your business and your staff from catastrophe”. April 2013.
Pauline Craw – Locality Hospital General Manager
“Simon provided education, training and excellent advice to our areas. He made fire lectures and presentations really worthwhile and you came out feeling as though you had learned something and it was useful. The practical work was excellent and really useful too.
Simon is passionate about his work – it shows. He is absolutely knowledgeable about his business and I would recommend anyone who requires his fire training – look no further than his business – it will meet all your needs.” Jan 2013.
Donald MacLeod – Senior Charge Nurse
“I worked with Simon in NHSH and he has excellent skills in teaching and training in fire and rescue. He taught me and my team many new skills and was extremely supportive to the team with fire evacuation methods.
He was always understanding to our needs and also patients needs and was always professional in his manner. He was friendly and was respected by staff for his knowledge.” Jan 2013
Richard Mills – Trainer of the Year – The Redcat Partnership Ltd
“I had the pleasure of teaching Simon through a qualification in the arcane art of training skills, and he certainly reached the heights of excellence. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Simon as a trainer; indeed, I’d certainly be happy to have Simon deliver training on my behalf.” Jan 2013
Lorraine Beigley – Manager
Simon provided excellent fire safety advice to me and our department. He worked closely with our partners who hosted our department in their building. Simon set up an awareness course for the department employees – this was a difficult challenge as the majority of the department employees worked outside normal working hours and on a varied shift pattern. Simon was able to accommodate our timings, working late himself to deliver his course”.
Paul Robins – Fire Risk Advisor
“Simon provided comprehensive fire safety training to all levels of staff. This proved to be of a high standard and enjoyable for participants. This included general fire safety advice, specific advice, evacuation training and fire extinguisher training”.
Training Delivered: Fire Warden with leisure specific content. A fire scenario session which included referring to site specific Emergency Action Plan, procedures, and drawings. Practical fire extinguisher training using the HAAGEN equipment.
The training delivered by Simon was specifically designed to reflect our internal policies and procedures and ensure it was relevant and appropriate.
The session delivered was both a mix of theory and practical, with excellent real life examples to reflect what we were learning, by a professional and enthusiastic trainer. There is no doubt that the sessions were well received and we would certainly have no hesitation in using Simon again in the future.
